Yesterday, September 2nd 2020, officers from the three divisions of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police; The Ottawa Municipal Police Force, and the Ontario Provincial Police, responded to a major disturbance of 2,500 armed protesters outside of the Parliament buildings in Ottawa. Individuals with firearms, in plain sight, were present at the time of the arrival of officers from the five jurisdictions. Multiple people were arrested as these types of protests are deemed unlawful.
It should be noted, that Mr. Grant Douglas, the leader of the Libertarian Party of Canada, was the organizer, facilitator, and primary lead for this protest. As a result, after conference with judicial officials, Mr. Grant Douglas has been taken into federal custody and will be held pending charges as he has been deemed a risk to society. The matter has been submitted to the Public Prosecution Service of Canada for consideration of charges.
The community members at the demonstration have a lawful right to protest. Though, there are public safety measures that must take place in order to ensure the safety and security of those participating and not participating. The RCMP is working hard to protect both of these matters to ensure that everyone involved is kept safe and is following the law.
The RCMP will continue to work with all stakeholders and provide assistance as necessary in maintaining peace and keeping everyone safe.
The five respective police forces continue to fulfill their respective mandates to protect public safety, enforce the law, and ensure the delivery of priority policing services in their communities.2
